Clinical Definition of COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease characterized by chronic obstruction of lung airflow that interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible. The more familiar terms ‘chronic bronchitis’ and ’emphysema’ are no longer used, but are now included within the COPD diagnosis.
Symptoms
- Shortness of breath, especially during physical activities
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Having to clear your throat first thing in the morning, due to excess mucus in your lungs
- A chronic cough that may produce mucus (sputum) that may be clear, white, yellow or greenish
- Blueness of the lips or fingernail beds (cyanosis)
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Lack of energy
- Unintended weight loss (in later stages)
- Swelling in ankles, feet or legs
How Does Salt Therapy Assist COPD?
When small salt particles are inhaled via your airway they reduce inflammation and can often reduce the production of sputum by coating the cilia fibres with salt. This coating reduces the production of bacteria and inflammation which are often present in recurrent secondary respiratory infections. This reduction in inflammation often reducing the audible wheezing and can also reduce chest tightness.
